Text analytics is difficult because language is complex and deriving meaning from text in an automated way is complicated. With the growth of social media text has never been more interesting. The overwhelming volume of digital-based text is driving interest in text analytics systems because manual text mining is prohibitively expensive and physically infeasible for high volume/high value situations. Evaluation of commercially available text analytics systems is challenging because other than the objective of “automatically deriving meaning from text” the products can be vastly different in their architecture and operation. A Comprehensive understanding of the basic technical architecture of a text analytics system is a requisite for building an optimal application portfolio focused on solving specific text-oriented business problems.
