In his book “Management,” Peter Drucker said that a business has three mandates: to build and maintain its customer base, to build and maintain its revenue stream, and to build and maintain its profitability. Running IT like a business means attending to your users, your costs and your margins. One way to comprehend the myriad activities involved in running an IT operation is to see those activities as elements of the IT product life cycle. IT is not just a set of discrete “projects” and a separate set of “legacy activities.” While much has been written about the management of IT projects, these are usually finite, bounded activities within the larger IT product life cycle context. In the course of this presentation, we discuss how to assess the overall portfolio of services, skills, and activities that help the head of infrastructure and operations manage those IT products that fall across his or her domain.
