Cloud computing is an alternative delivery and acquisition model for IT-related services and has become one of the hottest topics over the last 12 months. The principal, espoused benefits of cloud computing are lower service costs —due to greater resource sharing, greater economies of scale, and greater levels of architectural standardization and process optimization — and the capability to modify the use of those resources more quickly than traditional software can. This paradigm has the potential to shift the way purchasers of IT products and services contract with vendors and the way those vendors deliver their wares. However, there are also risks and barriers to the emergence of this model. Our panelists discuss and debate the timeline and implications of cloud computing for infrastructure and operations.
