The ITIL’s concept of a configuration management database (CMDB) is not new, yet the tools are immature. Somehow IT organizations must put together new technology with a process framework to implement a successful CMDB that attains business value and achieves some kind of return on investment. This is a complex balancing act between the CMDB definition, implementation, people and processes. Often the biggest challenges lie in the basics: tangible goals to get value, metrics to demonstrate value, and determining what data is the right data. This presentation provides vendor information, along with concrete best practice guidance and insight regarding areas that will affect your CMDB journey (e.g., virtualization). Whether a CMDB is in your company’s future, or you’re not sure or you’re well on your way, this presentation should not be missed.
